Memories take shape between people. A connection is forged, a fulcrum established, through the intersection of a shared moment and space. Otherwise, we are but a stroke up and a stroke down that never intersect, existing on separate planes.
《From IN》 — deconstructing the shape of the Chinese character “人” (human), it explores the very composition of “being human” from multiple dimensions. Starting with the structural strokes of the character, we peer through the form of “human” to the physical body, and then delve deeper beyond the body into the realm of spirit and memory.
Memories leave their traces; emotions retain their warmth. Encounter and separation are the origin of that stroke up and stroke down — the juncture where people connect, where bodies collide, where memories converge. 《From IN》 is a warm sanctuary to anchor our memories. That amplified moment of separation marks its final chapter.
Choreographer’s Notes
《From IN 》is the founding work of the Xiexin Dance Theatre. Premiered at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in 2015, it has since been staged nearly a hundred times at arts festivals both home and abroad, earning widespread acclaim. It stands as one of my most significant representative works. Over five years, I have continuously revised and refined it. Now, I hope it radiates a more profound “human warmth”. It is like a mirror reflecting my innermost thoughts — I have poured all the emotions I wish to express into this piece, hiding them within its every nuance.
“A stroke up and a stroke down” equals 人 (human) / 入 (to enter) / X — representing fulcrum, origin, connection, and deconstruction. “人” encompasses the literal character, the physical body, the spirit, and emotional memory; “入” symbolizes inwardness, the deepest origin; “X” signifies the unknown, connection, and deconstruction. The English title From IN — setting out from the innermost core, it touches the profound emotional memories we all share. If you quiet your mind and breathe in unison with us in the theater, you will uncover the hidden language woven into the work… the emotions that flow naturally through every movement… you will feel what that moment of separation, collapse, connection, and awakening brings to you…
《From IN》 is not a mere list or patchwork of movements, but rather a vessel through which emotions flow organically from within the body.
